 Proponents of a state-run economic sector emphasized such factors as equitable distribution of income and facilities, organized payment of subsidies, controlling and supervising prices, preventing amassment of wealth, as well as reducing poverty and establishing social justice.

Since the victory of the Islamic Revolution of Iran two economic views have received much attention from thinkers, experts and economic directors of the country and various aspects of both of them have even been implemented to some extent. Those two viewpoints include: state run economy and liberal, competitive economy.

Following the revolution, especially during the eight-year war with Iraq, political, economic and industrial conditions in the society necessitated state control over various affairs despite protests raised by certain groups. After the war was finished, social conditions changed and subsequently more economic openness; attention to economic adjustments; encouragement of privatization and investment; necessity of economic development and establishing a competitive market, as well as necessity of Iran’s membership in the World Trade Organization constituted major concerns of economic authorities as well as directors of various corporations and organizations.
