(Dr. Mehdi Assali)

Nuclear power plants will have numerous economic advantages for Iran given the constant growth in electricity consumption, said the head of Iran’s Institute for International Energy Studies.

According to the Persian daily Hamshahri, Mehdi Asali said the country needs nuclear energy to generate power, stressing that use of fossil energies is no longer economical due to ever-increasing oil prices.

He said the country can cut power generation costs by using nuclear energy, adding that most North American and European countries and Japan use nuclear power plants to meet their demand for electricity.

“The world has to realize that Iran has every right to substitute fossil fuels with nuclear energy in the long term like any other members of the international community,“ he said, noting that a country like France meets 80 percent of its electricity demand by using nuclear energy.

According to the Energy Ministry, power consumption growth rate has reached 10 percent per annum.
This is while nominal generation capacity at power plants stands at almost 33,000 megawatts, which cannot meet the growing demand in coming years.

The European Union, under mounting pressures from Washington, is trying to deprive Iran of nuclear technology.

After weeks of behind-the-scene lobbying, the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors in its last summer session approved a European Union (EU) draft resolution against Iran.
The strongly-worded resolution calls on Tehran to freeze all uranium enrichment-related activities and reconsider the construction of a research reactor moderated by heavy water.

It also wants access by the IAEA director general to individuals and to documents relating to procurement, dual use equipment, certain military-owned workshops and research and development locations.

Iran has rejected the resolution as ’illogical’ and ’unjust’, insisting on its alienable right to nuclear technology.
